Re: Game Programming
I understand, but why would you want to learn old API when DirectX10 can take advantage of new technologies not supported by previous versions.

Re: Game Programming
It depends on which platform you are aiming at. If you want to code for the Xbox you have to learn DirectX 8.1. Coding for the Xbox 360 you need to learn DirectX 9. And as Ooble said: if you want to code for Windows XP you can't use DirectX 10.

Re: Game Programming
I have to start somewhere right? I learned C before C++ and it actually helped me a little. And both languages helped me pick up C#. I'm going to start with OpenGL under Win32 (just because I found a decent book on it). When I get to the point where I know what I'm doing, I can learn a current API and keep up with the updates. My ultimate goal is to be able to write games that I can run on my 360, but I don't want to start off with XNA before I have a feel of how games are programmed for WIN32.

Re: Game Programming
I wouldn't dive into OpenGl yet (currently version 2.1) . There's actually a new version set for release any month now (version 3.0). The newest version is completely rebuilding the API, getting rid of the state based system and using a completely different object model. I say, pick up a good book on vector and discrete math and wait for 3.0 to come out. Of course, unless you want to go the Microsoft way ....

Re: Game Programming
I recommend you go straight into some version of DirectX because its obvious you have time and you migh as well use this time to work with something better then to waste it...

Re: Game Programming
I'd recommend using the XNA framework for developing games on win32. It would make the porting of your developed game to 360 quite trivial.
