Hi, welcome to ProgrammingForums.org

Your programming ability has nothing to do with your age but your dedication and time spent learning the language you study. Anyway some people prefer older programmers. For example i applied to a company called Visual Soft about a year ago when i finished school and they wouldn't take me on because i was too young

Anyway if you really want to program then no you are not wasting your time at all.

Re: 30 years old and interested in programming. Wasting my time?

I didn't start learning C programming until 1984 or so when I was 41 years old. After I retired from United States Air Force in 1985 I bought a cheap computer and intro to programming book, then read the book. In those days we didn't have internet or boards like PFO to ask questions. After a few weeks studying I landed an intro job with a temp agency and my programming career took off from there.

So to make a long story short -- age 30 is not too late to start, at least it wasn't in my case.

Take it easy and learn one thing at a time.
I would suggest that you take a basic course on computers, how they work, etc.. before getting started to program.
You can register at a community college and take a few courses on programming.

I am totally computer literate. I started in 1988 with a zx Spectrum 48k, then commodore 64, 286, 386, 486 etc etc. Becuase of financial situations and others had no time to study and had to get to work to earn money for the family..(her daddy made me...unexpected you see ...lol)

I still kept my hand on computers and taught myself everything i know. DOS, Linux, Windows 3.1 etc etc.
I touched on many high level languages, BASIC, COBOL, PASCAL, FORTRAN...but never really sat down and learn to communicate with them. Truly understand it, like speaking enlglish. A book here, an article there. It always grabbed my attention though.

I have always been curious as far back as i can remember, i consider myself to be extremely intelligent too. I never finished school, because of the baby. I did grade 11, then a couple of years later broadcasting management at University. I had to do an entrance exam as i never finished high school, passed, and was accepted.

Now i really want to get back into what i love and truly captures me. Its been so long ago, but taking everybody's advice and working through the recommended material is helping alot. I guess this forum provides me with the support and motivation, I needed.

Thank you very much.
Now back to the books...

Re: 30 years old and interested in programming. Wasting my time?

I've been programming with a program called Gamemaker and once I mastered that I learned HTML really quickly and now I'm working on C++.

I would reccomend doing some kind of other programming before you dive into the codes of your computer. If you want to try Gamemaker go to www.yoyogames.com

You definately have a lot of questions LOL inquizitive mind, Your 30 & wonder if your to old to get into programming, Think it was somewhere between 1998 and 2002 when I got my first look at Visual Basic 6 ( Visual Studio Enterprise ), I would have had to have been 32 or 33 to 36 or 37 years old then, When I got my hands on a copy of it I had no idea at all what I was doing, What I was in for, I was in for major headaches and frustrations, I had no one to ask anything, I had no one to teach or show me anything at all, I was completely on my own with no idea at all, I new without a doubt it was something I wanted to get into & do & learn, It made me so frustrated at times and with no help, I almost gave up, eventually I did quit as it was not going good for me & could not find any help at the time, But I kept a copy of VB6 and a few years after my dad passed away I desided I would give it a whirl again ( I told my father before he passed away I would be programming someday ). Well it was driving me batty again but I stuck it out ( I had found a little help that kept me going). I ended up taking a course in Visual Basic .NET cos I had the cash to pay for it and the drive and ambition to go for it. Mind you I did not complete the course due to a person I lent $1,000.00 to di not pay me back intime for next payment I had to make for the course, I was 39 or 40 when I started the course, And here I am again amd still at it, Mind you I have forgot alot in my time of not touching it for a while, But I have made a few progyz that most of the people that got copies of have really liked what I had made, That is 1 thing that keeps me going, So I would say to you GO FOR IT, don't let your youth hold you back , so your 30 I am 42 LOL don't call me grampa LOL, Stick to it it may be hard at first but it does get easier, T C 4 N ( Take Care 4 Now ) .... ICE
