At the very least, if you do a good job, you can use them as a reference. It's also entirely possible that you could find paying work through volunteer work if you make a good impression; word of mouth is still a hugely powerful mechanism of gaining employment. If you make it clear (to the people you're volunteering for) that you're looking to build a portfolio for yourself, and you conduct yourself professionally, there's a very good chance that someone in the organization will recommend you to a paying client.

Try to negotiate terms of remuneration. If they're non-profit, they probably can't afford to pay much, if anything, but they can certainly credit you in a newsletter or some such as PhilBon says. Let them know you'd consider that suitable payment. If you're up-front about stuff like this, rather than working for free and then getting upset if it doesn't lead anywhere, everyone involved will be more satisfied.

Before considering this position you should at-least know one or more of the following programming languages.

C
C++
Visual C#
Visual Basic
AutoIt
Java

Compensation:
You as the programmer will be paid for your work. Generally the compensation system works like so..

dividends = (amount)/(n+1);

dividends is the amount each programmer will receive. n represents the number of programmers, and the 1 represents the business expense account. So for example, if we get a $500 client, and there are 3 programmers working on that project you would receive $150 + any bonuses. If you recommended the client to us, you will receive an additional 10% of the total cost of the project.

You have two options of being paid.
Your first option is via paypal. We will send your money to your paypal account. This is the fastest and recommended way.

If you don't have a paypal account, we will send you a check.

We currently have a website: http://blox.no-ip.org/design (the website is down at the moment)
but we are awaiting a domain name (planned to be bloxsoftware.com).

If you have any more questions, please email me at chris95219@gmail.com, or add me on msn at chris95219@yahoo.com.
I'm interested so pls contact me on ssereman@yahoo.com.au. I'm familiar with Visual Basic 6 and VB.NET. If I can help in any way and earn bucks, that'd be great.

While I'd be interested, the lack of scope here seems fairly overwhelming, I think a lot more information is required before I could really say if interested (or had time/ability).

Also, if just designing software, why the need for any programming skills, designing software can be quite different skills to coding it, also what sort of design work do you expect (any particular design protocols).
