Website Pricing

I'm just wondering how much people charge for websites?

usually i charge about 800 - 900 AUD for a normal 8-12 page static site with contact forms

and for a basic CMS i charge about 1,600 (this is with free 12 month support)

for extras i quote $70 an hour and for updates i charge $60 an hour.

If you know what you are doing and you have experience with a profile to show users your past work, then your prices seem fair. It might be a bit higher than what other people are charging though, so if you are having trouble getting clients then you might want to lower it.

I really wish you the best of luck, you're going to need it. Users constantly changing their mind, wanting stupid little javascript stuff everywhere. In my early days I was actually very productive but I recently quit because my old team left and the new guys I got could barely use a mouse. I ended up making two versions of the site. One where I did it solo and another where the team worked together. The difference was night and day. They hated my design, yet loved the horrible looking one with almost zero graphics (all HTML) that broke almost every rule of usability you can imagine.

edit: I just checked the site since I had left the team earlier in April. They broke one of the strongest rules I had for our team and did what I told them never to do.... use a cheesy flash intro. *bangs head on desk*

edit 2: I just wanted to add that this was after they deleted the entire public_html folder in May because the site got hacked and they didn't know how to remove it. *shoots self in head*

And this is somebody else's company I presume. What's the name in case I ever forget how to make a website?

i'm not asking for business, i'm not trying to undercut anyone, i'm not trying to find out if i'm being ripped off i'm simply wondering what the going rate for web pages usually are.

I've been getting word of companies in Melbourne charging up to $10,000 for dynamic style web pages - that, i believe is way too much; this is why i was asking how much you people charge for web pages to see if it really is too much, or it is the right amount.

Your prices seem somewhat high to me, but if each page is high quality and your customers business improves because of it, it is probably worth it to them. I would charge what you do for static pages, except I always add a cms of some sort.
If they are hiring for a static page, chances are even editing the html now and then is beyond what they can or want to do, so with no easy automatic way for them to update the content, that page is gonna turn into a never ending series of update requests for you. $10,000 is ridiculous for most basic sites, but not that expensive if its a full fledged web application.

Of course many people hiring you for static pages have no clue what goes into one, so its up to you to judge what is fair or what you want to charge.
