I once copied an x86 executable to a 68000 machine and changed the extension to .com. That sucker ran off into the pasture and incinerated all the calf nuts. I had to eat sauteed mushrooms for six months. Bummer.

I wonder if it would work in Linux without recompiling :beard:

Lol, DaWei have you ever considered comedy as a profession?

Hm............:beard:

Just to add a little bit to the topic though, I don't think anyone's mentioned that the 64-bit instruction sets added some more registers to the CPU, slightly reducing the need to go to cache/RAM as often.

If only the Itanium had made its way into the desktop market... :beard:

Personally, I'm actually more interested in IBM's Power architecture. I think it's a real shame that Apple ditched it in favor of x86 considering how vastly superior it is by comparison. But money is money and the x86 port was neccessary to bring more Windows users over to the Mac.

In any case, we should get off the x86 architecture. Considering what a complete hack todays x86 chips are, it's amazing they are performing as well as they are in terms of processoring power per watt. I don't do much low-level coding, but I would guess that it's not an easy platform to write an assembler or compiler for.

This was in 1992. Today is 2007. Interesting how things turned out.

This may be true of a specific architecture, but we were talking in general. Different architectures have different cache sizes too, however the OP was aking about the diffrence between 32 and 64 bit machines without specifying anything else, so we had to guess.

OT: I reckon DaWei would make a good comedian.
