You can't be blamed if you didn't keep your previous commitment because the dependable resources weren't there, even if you were were warned that they wouldn't be there.
Bailing out (study duties, or whatever) and saying, "I will return" was very MacArthuresque.
Returning and failing to even mention the previous (uncompleted) task, impossible though it might have been, while introducing a NEW task, is somewhat pitiful. Maybe they won't remember?
