In the red corner, the champion, holding quite possible the most influential, and definitely the most used OS in the world; Bill Gates. His company, Microsoft has made him a multi-billionaire.

And the challenger, in the blue corner, Linus Torvalds! Creator of Microsoft's biggest competitor, and giving away his OS, Torvalds has made quite a name for himself amongst the more computer-literate people.

Who wins? You decide.

Answer the following questions disregarding money:

1.) Who's the more talented? Bill Gates or Linus Torvalds, and why?

2.) Which is a better OS, Linux or Windows?

3.) What has had a bigger influence on your life? Windows, or Linux.

4.) Which do you believe is the future of computing?

5.) Which would you reccomend for a lay person?

6.) Which do you prefer using?

7.) Which has better software?

8.) If you could meet one of the two, Gates or Torvalds, who would you chose to meet, and why?

Answer the following question regarding money:

9.) Are Microsoft's products worth the extra money?

Linus Torvalds for creating Linux.

Linux when I came to realize that not everyone has proper support for it.

1.) Who's the more talented? Bill Gates or Linus Torvalds, and why?

Difficult to say, BG identified a very promising business moment in his life and milked it to the extreme, that is not an easy task to accomplish even when you do get as far as identifying the opportunity.

Linux on the other hand organized and created the foundation of the largest community powere movement in probably the entire world... never had any programming team managed so many people in such efficient ways, and he harnessed this power to create a shiny new operating system. Some 2 people teams can hardly write hello world due to bad managment

2.) Which is a better OS, Linux or Windows?

I am more productive in windows because things just work, I do not have to configure all day, or fight to get libraries installed and programs compiled... it is all just there, and Windows has a uniform and professional interface for all applications which simplifies the process of getting things done.

Linux on the other hand has thousands of free tools available which makes writing code for me so much easier to do, actually when I write code I tend to use Linux in a vritual machine so that I can do DB and sciprting stuff to help me complete my task and windows to compile and develop (if windows is the target platform).

I would have to say that linux wins here though, personally.

--eh too tired to finish the rest now--

1.) Who's the more talented? Bill Gates or Linus Torvalds, and why?
They have completely different talents, Gates is a businessman and good at it(apparently), but Linus is a million times the coder Gates is. On the other hand, he could care less about money/business stuff.

2.) Which is a better OS, Linux or Windows?
Linux.
Pros: Stability, reliability, security, design/architecture. Openness.
Cons: Immaturity of applications and distros. There is a long way to go before

3.) What has had a bigger influence on your life? Windows, or Linux.
I use linux exclusively, so there's not much choise. If I don't count the countless hours of "family help desk" work I keep doing =)

4.) Which do you believe is the future of computing?
Linux. Or something completely different.

5.) Which would you reccomend for a lay person?
Maybe Suse linux?

6.) Which do you prefer using?
Linux(gentoo)

7.) Which has better software?
windows stuff generally has more polish, which is really nice. I hate having to read tons of documentation to be able to hand-edit those 200 configuration files.
But there's a lot of good stuff for linux, with or without polish. I really can't decide on this one.

8.) If you could meet one of the two, Gates or Torvalds, who would you chose to meet, and why?
I don't particularly want to meet any one of them.

Answer the following question regarding money:

9.) Are Microsoft's products worth the extra money?
No. The polish is a good thing, but the inreliability, insecurity and closedness makes it unusable in my opinion.

1.) Who's the more talented? Bill Gates or Linus Torvalds, and why?
Easy question. Linus Torvalds made a world class operating system that helped revolutionize computing.

2.) Which is a better OS, Linux or Windows?
Linux, but that's not to say that Windows doesn't have it's advantages.

3.) What has had a bigger influence on your life? Windows, or Linux.
Windows. I'm sure that will change as I use Linux more.

4.) Which do you believe is the future of computing?
Open source. I haven't a clue the specific os.

5.) Which would you reccomend for a lay person?
If they have a decent IT guy, Linux can be configured to be much better for the laymen. Otherwise ,Windows.

6.) Which do you prefer using?
Linux. It's new and fun.

7.) Which has better software?
Probably Linux.

8.) If you could meet one of the two, Gates or Torvalds, who would you chose to meet, and why?
Linus Torvalds. I'd have much more I want to talk about with him. I'd only be tempted to get in an argument with Gates.

Answer the following question regarding money:

9.) Are Microsoft's products worth the extra money?

Certainly not.

1.) Who's the more talented? Bill Gates or Linus Torvalds, and why?
I sya Linus is more Talented... Bill was just a good buisness man

2.) Which is a better OS, Linux or Windows?
Windows, It may crash, but linux crashes more for me, and it runs slower for some reason, thats mostly because I don't have much experiance with it

3.) What has had a bigger influence on your life? Windows, or Linux.
Windows, I can run most of my apps on windows with greater ease, and I get payed for fixing windows when it crashes

4.) Which do you believe is the future of computing?
I'm undecided on it, I might say linux because it is slowly gaining more and more power and popularity, and now some very user friendly distro's are coming out

5.) Which would you reccomend for a lay person?
Windows, easyer to grasp

6.) Which do you prefer using?
Windows, but like I said, not enough experiance with linux

7.) Which has better software?
I'd say their both equal, but windows has better game support

8.) If you could meet one of the two, Gates or Torvalds, who would you chose to meet, and why?
Gate's... He's a rich Motha Fu**a... I'll mooch some money off that guy

9.) Are Microsoft's products worth the extra money?
Who buys Microsoft's Products? I'm not premoting Warez, but My school doesn't even use a store bought version of Windows, yes, I know that buisnesses and such still buy it, so don't yell at me

Great thread!

However, i am the kinda guy who would put Bill Gates and Richart Mathew Stallman in the ring.. hm.. actually, there are TWO challengers to Gates, not only Linus Torwalds, but RMS as well..

Okay.. to questions and answers:

1.) Who's the more talented? Bill Gates or Linus Torvalds, and why?

Tough question. Both are definitely very talented. Probably *equaly*. However, Linus definitely uses his talent in a better way and for a more worthy cause.

2.) Which is a better OS, Linux or Windows?

Linux, you all know why. Ultimately!

3.) What has had a bigger influence on your life? Windows, or Linux.

As a free as in freedom operating system that brought me to open source and then free software movement, made me believe in it, made me an enthuast and even made me found a web site about it.. No doubt about it, Linux and free software changed my life!

4.) Which do you believe is the future of computing?

Linux and free as in freedom operating systems like it. Linux is leading the crowd. Windows and proprietary software will *eventually* become deprecated, irrelevant and incompetent to match the accelerating advancements of FOSS technology.

5.) Which would you reccomend for a lay person?

Even if windows is currently the easiest to use, for his own good, i would never recomment it to him. Instead, i would recommend the next best thing in ease of use which can be one of the latest linux desktop oriented distros. Ultimately, my fellow friend would benefit and be happy.

6.) Which do you prefer using?

Operating system that makes me free and in control.. guess..

7.) Which has better software?

As it currently is, i think that in regard to quality free software reaches or at least is generally as good as proprietary software (equal), but in certain areas it's much more advanced while it some it lacks. However, all lacking areas will get improved before you know it. It's the accelerating and unstoppable nature of free as in freedom software development.

8.) If you could meet one of the two, Gates or Torvalds, who would you chose to meet, and why?

As i have become one of the MS *dislikers* (not to say *haters* ) i don't have any interest in meeting Bill Gates unless i would silly think that i can convience him to change his ideology and "open source" the whole company he ows. So, the answer is Linus, i'd like to have a chat with the guy who made the core of the OS that makes me free and in control.

9.) Are Microsoft's products worth the extra money?

NO!

This felt like an interview

Thank you
Daniel
