Just one point I thought would be worth making: I understand what you're saying about manually checking the content, but you could still put it in the database and just change the code around it to only display items that have their 'approved' flag set, then add a simple administrative page to your site that you can approve the content with. It's still tidier and more reliable than having the email stage and shouldn't be too hard to add.

Just a thought.
