The concept that these type of kids seem to be missing is that those type of games have teams of -skilled and dedicated- people and it takes them years to develop it.

I never had a desire to make a video game; however, I have had a desire to write guidance software for missile systems, not to mention to conquer the world. The desire is what establishes goals, although some of their goals will never be reached, they have a potential to learn a great deal in the process.

One of the main important things they may learn is that their efforts are futile. Imho, one has to experience failure to appreciate success.

On a side note, age is really irrelevant. I've seen pre-teens that could code circles around most college graduates. I also know of a 72 year old that wanted to remake solitaire. What's really at play, is the person's mindset.

Here is a definition for reference: A code monkey is an amateur computer programmer who stiches together snippets of code found on the internet and in books and puts them together to make an application, without having an appreciation or understanding what the principles behind the code or the concept of coding are.
