If you really don't have the intelligence to grasp this then you have no business touching anything with electricity flowing through it
It's actually not a matter of being intelligent, it's more of a matter of not being retarded.

You're missing the fucking point.

in computers Kilo can mean either 1000, or 1024. with bus speeds it's 1000, with storage it's 1024.

we can't keep it simple and stick with Megabytes being 1024KB, because it ain't simple, and a megabyte isn't 1024KB all the time, Mega isn't always 1024

It seems that a lot of technical vocabulary is used wrongly (I guess that's intrinsic), confusing many people.

A recent example is on a tv ad for Sky broadband in the UK. When discussing speeds I've heard x megabytes per second as the norm. This advert talked about x megabits per second. A quick search on google with those two search terms returns a similar number of hits for each.

I suspect that megabits is correct, but the confusion still stands!

Oh, and I support these prefixes, but again doubt that they'll come into widespread use.

There might be a reason why Binary Prefixes are only inside wikipedia. In my opinion i don`t like very much changes, i prefer standards and totally agree with DaWei. But don`t forget that it might be you that is missing the point.

Mainly because people don't know the difference, and when you try to explain the difference you have those that call what you're telling them garbage, and those that don't care enough to be educated to what is right, even for simple shit.

I tell my dad every time he calls it an SUB port that it's a USB port, and he just doen't care to "learn" the right words to use...

there are no fucking standards, you think giga is 1024 mega, but that guy selling you a harddrive and a flash drive thinks it's 1000, so does your proccessor,

the mega you use with your hard drive is not the same mega you use with your proccessor.

it's like using a meter stick to measure a yard.

EDIT: I already said I don't see it getting widespread use, not because it's not a great idea, it's one of the greatest I heard in a while, but because most people would be either too stubborn to change, too stupid to understand the difference, or just don't give a shit about what a gigabyte is.

Most people don't care about the difference, and most of those who do, know about it before hand. So where's the issue?

the issue is that it makes no sense to measure a foot with a yard stick

And by the way if you are so interested in that thing take some believers with you and go protest somewhere to standardize it your way.

Good luck with that.

what you say isn't possible, a kilogram is still 1000 grams, I'm pretty sure that the BIPM hasn't changed that.

when I said that it isn't standardised, I meant that there isn't a commonly accepted standard besides that of ignorance.

the BIPM has stated that SI measurements are not to be used as binary prefixes. the IEC has came up with Binary Prefixes, IEEE, CIPM, and NIST, all support it. It's already starting to get used. BitTorrent, DC++, the Linux Kernel, and other programs already use it.

I have said that I have only ever come accross it being used on wikipedia, doesn't mean that's the only place it is used.

Grammar teachers have come up with the idea that people shouldn't say, "The IEC has came up with....", but I hear there's a move afoot in PA to change that. Go figure.
