Hi,

I'm looking to start learning Java properly - I've done some programming in it but I am still unaware of the technicalities of the language and from looking at the SCJP questions there is a whole lot of stuff I don't know.

Ideally, I'd want something that would start from scratch and then build me up to a level where I'd be competent enough and educated enough to sit and pass the SCJP exam.

I've looked in the tutorial section here and it didn't fill me with much confidence. Can anyone on here please recommend a route to me - Ideally I'd rather not pay for an online course...

My suggestion would be to get a book on the subject. I doubt you'll find anything online that will compare favorably to what you'll find in a book on training for the SCJP exam.

i am currently using it for my class. It if easy to read with lots of examples and practice. it is for beginers in programming. this verion has both OOP and swing GUI. you can get the first have witch is mostly general progarmaming with OOP.

mrynit, are you a lecturer or a student?

I've used the Dietel & Dietel book Java: How to Program and was wondering if you know how it compares to the one you mention?

I want to get something that builds me up to SCJP level and TBH I've been unable ato answer 99.9% of the questions on the sample tests i've done online so far!!!

The Deitel book is good for the basics, which is what the SCJP exam covers. I've read itand I'm betting you could pass the test using it. If you already know the basics and just want a specific exam review, get a SCJP book.

I have never read the book you mention

I have no experiance with the SCJP and I'm not sure if the book I said to get would help you directly pass the test. The book I told you to get is good for begining programing in Java.

This book is very easy to read and contains self exams and answers for every chapter of the book. It also comes with a cd. Not to mention, for as long as I have been programming in Java, I have learned a lot about the language that I didn't know before reading this book.
