Vista

Has anyone tried Vista yet? I get a free copy through my school, but I wont be trying it out until the end of the semester. I just wanted to hear some of your opinions of it.

The general consensus among people I talk to is that it's more bloatware and eyecandy than genuine advancement. In other words, make sure you have plenty of processor and graphics power, and memory. From past experience, I wouldn't install it until the first service pack, at least, was released.

The only thing that is going to get me to try it is if I can get a legal copy for cheap or free. And even then I would still need to upgrade my computer alot to handle it. I agree with DaWei that it might be best to wait until SP1 comes out, I have heard alot of people saying this.

I've heard a mix of "It's just as fast as XP only prettier" and "omg it's horrible" but I spent too much time on various Linux forums, so lots of flaming in general by people who've probably not used it. I'm waiting a few months before I get it.

from what i hear that vista is pretty good, specialy on content protection, i think the amount content protection packed int that thing might just affect the performance of the overall OS, from what i hear it has to check the state of its hardware atleast 30x every second (properly not true), most people that would get vista are those people that get a new computer and it just comes with the new computer, but i only had xp for a year and i think its good enough for me, my school were giving it out aswell but the people that were giving it out hardly gave any detail about the product that they were giving it out, they just said the magic (microsoft) and then people got up and got it.

My university just sent out an e-mail to all students stating that because they haven't yet had a chance to test and review security software for Vista, and Cisco Clean Access doesn't yet support Vista, they will not allow computers running Vista to access the internet for the remainder of the schoolyear.

I've been developing .NET 3.0 apps on Vista Ultimate for a few months now at work, and having used OS X in the past, I don't understand this comment.

I have found Vista to be quite stable, as I rarely reboot or shut down my machine. I also haven't noticed any sluggishness. The only problem we've run into at this point is finding printer drivers for all of the printers in the office.

This is entirely rubbish. And what did OS X copy? Fanboy commentary is quite common. It's no substitute for reasoned discussion.
