Oddly enough, when I got bored I also turned to MUD development.
Then to a client-server chat program... then to a remote monitoring program.

Its all about the learning process really. You will more than likely enjoy working on a MUD though... or as one already mentioned joining a source forge project.

If you are really bored you could get into some full out natural speech work. It would be a research in progress at pretty much all times of development, but hey, get good at it and you can probably win a few awards too, lol.

The other thing I have been thinking about doing myself is writing a 64bit virtual machine, memory on memory--you could always do one of those too. Aim for RISC based architecture, download the SRM Assembly specifications and use that as a base. I personally am not going to work with SRM Assembly, since it implies using something like 32 registers, and the purpose of memory on memory is not to actually use registers. And well 64 bits is just something new.

I need a project to get me more situated with C#, and it would not hurt to introduce myself to low level 64 bit code while I am at it. If you get REALLY REALLY bored you could write your own C/C++ compiler (or even your own language) to comile assemblies for your VM. I'll probably do it to kill some time, lol.

You know that's probably how a lot of the large scale companies came to be.

I cannot discuss what I do at work, however on personal projects I'm currently working on a Geographical Information System and C++ reusable code libraries.

Has there been a decision on the creation of the "projects forum"?

You shoudl throw that suggestion to the suggestions forum, project management I know is a big concern for a lot of people, and there are many question left unanswered in that field.

Strangely, a lot of large companies do form of strange boring ideas like I mentioned, I am almost positive that is not going to go anywhere though. A simple virtual machine that really servres no purpose as I never have the intention on making it nearly as complete a framework as Java or .NET--unless there is demand

It is all just meant to be fun And a learning experience.

I completely agree. The money isn't all that bad either

Actually I am a fairly avid supporter of the open source community, I have released a good number of my projects with BSD/MIT and similar license types (I am a big fan of the BSD OSLA).

http://www.cliffordroche.com/projects.php mind you that page is now VERY out of date, lol.

If someone wants to give me money for a silly little project like that though, I certainly am not going to complain.

You have some interesting projects there. In the past I have not been to pro-OpenSource because that is how I made my living. I much rather work on an exisiting OpenSource project as opposed to opening one of my own, time will tell though. Hopefully, I can browse through the projects at Source Forge and see where I can contribute.

I have never made any money selling software for personal use, besides most of my stuff are libraries, or sections of code I have opensourced. I have one full project I open sourced (no commercial value to it anyway) and I think I made about $10 in one year of donations from users, lol.

I stick to corporate consulting/development when I want to make money, it pays well and I find that open sourcing helps get the name around.

That's a good idea. Helps to get the name established etc. I do not have anything useful to others, other than my personal libraries and algorithms. Most of my personal projects are with GIS, AI and Geology... maybe I can put up some research ideas eventually.
