Advertising

Recently, there has been some controversy regarding advertising in video games. People say that the video game industry is "selling out". They say that it destroys the feel of the video game by having brand names in a game. It's so unrealistic to have a billboard with a big coke logo on it in the background.

BULL. If anything, moderate advertising makes a game more realistic. Advertising is everywhere, and having familiar logos around in moderation actually makes it more realistic. Besides that, when a company is paid to have a big Target poster in the background, it means that THE GAME WILL BE CHEAPER. How do you think cable and radio pays for itself? Certainly not from the meager cable bill. No. Their money comes in from the million dollar commercial ads. It makes everything cheaper. If we had to pay per channel or per show, we would be shelling out a fortune. But because we allow the evil corporate giants to brainwash us with their sinister plot to get us to buy their product, it makes the product we wanted in the first place cheaper!!!

I don't buy video games anyways, so I could only care a small bit less... then again, I do like the idea of stuff getting cheaper for me on someone else's dime... :p

I am like Jimbo and don't buy video games really. But I do agree with you that ads in games kind of make it more real because of the fact that ads are every where in real life. I always find it fun when I do play to find the ads, I think it is kind of fun to search for them.

I have no problem with in-game ads if they make the game cheaper. Perhaps eventually we will have games that rely more on such ads than retail sales, but that time is probably a long way off.

I don't mind a few ads as long as they are put in as part of the game world and not just blatant, in-your-face ads. I am getting very very sick of the ridiculous amount of ads I encounter when doing anything, and how insultingly stupid the ads seem to be. I would rather pay the $60 or whatever for a good game that I can relax by, then having flashing, annoying ads shoved in my face. After all, the point of a game for me is to relax and have some fun, and I'll pay for quality rather than have ads take away from the experience just to save a few bucks

A sad big ass pop-up shouting in your face that this game was powered by some weird company that everyone is supposed to know about, which will now scan your computer absolutely for nothing, as you have viruses. Of course, you need to click on the 'Accept' button when your browser asks - otherwise it won't work. If you close it by accident - don't worry! - it will just pop-up again, but in a bigger window this time.

That's what I call in your face-advertising.

the burger king rules.

on a more important note...those that feel that video games are "selling out"...well, yeah, quite literally, and who gives a fuck?

it doesn't bother me, in fact i enjoy the real-world elements in a ficticious world, it makes it seem more real. would you rather have sam fisher sneak past a "super cola" machine or a coca-cola machine? i only creep past name brand merchandise before i kill someone. wtf, who cares?

personally i think this argument sounds like an assertion from a 13-year-old kid.

(note: i did not mean to offend any teenagers, but ya'll are generally pretty jaded and unrealistic...i know i was )
