Assuming that the language you're learning is similar to the ones you know already, of course. Some languages require a different style of thinking to what you may be used to.

Thanks for all the great replies! After some more research I'm quite sure I will go with C++

I've seen several books on the subject and was wondering if you guys can reconment one. Also some books are on C++ and some on Visual C++ are those the same thing or is there a difference?
