In the real world java is used in a lot of business and information systems. In the real world windows is not everywhere either. MS might rule the desktop but they sure dont rule the server. As said before J# was created so that MS can say they have a java migration path. Whether or not it really is I dont know because I have never migrated an application from java to it, but i think it only inculdes the Java API's from Java 1.1 so its probably quite useless.

Compaines dont chop and change languages and platforms on a whim. They dont use what is cool or what is on the bleeding edge of technology, they use stable, secure and mature systems. Java has been around for 10 years and there is a hell of a lot of code that is just that. Its just been anounced that Sun will release it under the GPL so its here to stay.

C# is great, but MS will never release a version for solaris or linux. Java is great beucause it runs on windows, solaris and linux. But why stop there, C and C++ are great because that is everwhere too. In fact there are about 10 languages that are avaliable on all three of those platforms that are a far safer choice than anything MS creates. Remeber what MS did with VB? They basically said VB6 is dead, long live VB.net. That pissed a lot of people off and i dont think i would trust MS not to do it again. I dont care if C# and half the .net class library and CLR are ECMA standards. They will one day find a way to fuck all C# programmers when the next thing comes along in say 10 years time.

It would sure be interesting to see it pointed out where I said that. It doesn't matter whether or not Microsoft is going to be around a long time. The fact is that the large majority of existing microprocessor systems are not running Windows/.NET or anything else you think is so prevalent because all you see is the desktop/laptop area of the world.
