Need help with mapping

I have been instructed by my boss to use the OpenLayers mapping technology. It can be found at http://www.openlayers.org. I am also running the map server MS4W(Map server for windows) which can be found at http://www.maptools.org/ms4w. Finally, he gave me a set of maps to download, which i got from here http://www.nyc.gov/html/dcp/html/bytes/dwnblk.shtml. I am also using the OGC Workshop as my app on the map server.

I am able to get OpenLayers to function properly with OGC and MS4W using the samples provided by OGC. However, what i am confused about is how to add new maps. Are the maps in that link the right format? Which should I download? I am absolutely 100% confused as to how i am supposed to add a map to OGC.

I tried searching google but found absolutely no documentation on how OGC workshop works (which is highly disapointing, if you are going to release a piece of software, at least include some documentation and/or a basic tutorial!). If anyone knows of any more polished apps for MS4W please tell me about them. I am totally confused and in need of much help.

the zip you download from the site has a "doc" folder full of a bunch of crap, however its not really readable.

upon viewing the readme file though i see that if you run the doc.sh script in the "build" directory it will generate a html version of the documentation.

incase you don't know .sh files are linux shell scripts, so you'll need to run it on a linux/unix box and it should generate a nice html file full of the documentation.

other than that i know absolutely nothing about this application, other than it claims it can import any type of map into it.

so most likely the maps you got will work.
