Why link with lib file?

I am playing around with dll files in my C++ application and have a question about the linking. It seems to me that there are two ways to use the functions defined in the dll file: use the dll as a reference, or link with its lib file.

So to my question:
Why bother linking with the lib file, when I can use the dll directly?

I am using the Visual Studio .NET 2003 compiler and linker.

Thanks for your help!
