How long will it take us to kill the earth?

Hi folks! Well there's alot of talk going around about global warming and such.

But I'd like to ask you how long you think it'll take for us to kill our environment here on earth?

Depends what you mean by "kill". The Earth's biosphere is hardier than we are; we'd die out long before the Earth became uninhabitable to all life. And in a few million years - a blink of an eye in geological terms - there would be little trace we'd ever existed.

The only reason we should take care of our environment is because the alternative is likely to be far more expensive, and possibly even fatal for us as a species. Fortunately, however, the effects of climate destruction appear to be gradual, so it's unlikely we'd ever reach the stage where we render the Earth uninhabitable to humans. Of course, that's not to say we shouldn't take steps now to prevent it - at the very least, it'll save effort later on.

We'll have destroyed ourselfs with technology before that ever happens.

I hate these global warming nuts that think that the republicans and president bush are somehow at fault with this. But if they had a little bit of common sense, they would realize that global warming isn't something that is exclusive to this millenia; it is actual part of a process that the earth has under gone numerous times before now. When there is an Ice Age, it gets extremely cold. When the Ice Age, the climate warms up phenomenally. Didn't the earth end its ice age about 10,000 years ago? thats not that much considering that the earth has been around for a billion or so years (not sure on the estimated amount).

But anyways, my point is that the ice age has ended, and now the earth is in the state of warming up. Wouldn't it be logic for the polar ice caps to melt b/c the climate isn't cold enough to sustain the sub-zero temperatures needed to keep them in their icy form. I am not badgering anyone that has posted to this thread, but more or less the idiotic liberals that can't look at science and instead blame the republicans for their fault of not having knowledge to say anything else..Just wanted to throw in my 2 cents

While it is true that humans have contributed something, global warming is not a new phenomenon. Geological history has included a long series of warm periods and cold periods. We're currently slightly above middle of that range, in terms of average temperature; in fact, there is some evidence that dinosaurs lived in a period a fair bit warmer than now.

On that basis, I believe we will not destroy the earth or its environment. We will continue to contribute to changing of the environment, but we are definitely not the only cause of global warming. No matter what we do, it is virtually a given that the environment on earth will eventually change into a state where we can't easily survive. Common sense says, however, that it is prudent that we attempt to minimise our contribution to global warming.

I dislike this attitude as much as I dislike the attitude that global warming is going to destroy the Earth. Whilst it's true that the Earth regularly goes through temperature variations, it's also true that human industry has produced considerably more global warming gases than would be natural, and reduced considerably more biomass than natural causes would account for (short of an asteroid strike). Furthermore, we've already proved that we can significantly affect our biosphere - look at the Ozone depletion over the south pole. It seems naive to hope that our current activities will not have an effect on our environment.

It's worth pointing out that the majority of environmental scientists seem to hold the view that man is contributing to global warming. Even if "the idiotic liberals" are not looking at science, they appear to be listening to people who do.

It depends on what you mean by "earth" if you mean the planet that we live on then I would guess at the current rate of polution growth... about 500 years.
