I wouldn't, at least not at first. Tinker around with the tutorials... see if you can benefit from the language. Only get a book as a reference when you need more specific info. At least, that's what I do... having said that, I own a lot of programming books and other related topics. It never hurts to have them on hand. Although, the PHP.net documentation is fairly good, check into it too.
