I almost wish these sites required you to scan your birth certificate, rather than merely check off a box that states you are over 13.

Or better yet, require a valid drivers license. Then they would have some level of maturity.

I posted on this forum for years without a driver's license (I have one now) and I never made ridiculous pie-in-the-sky posts about building a server OS to rival commercial Unix and Windows offerings by myself, or posted any nonsense about making Flash games in Python. I'm also a great deal smarter (this is not conceit, it's simple observation) than many adults I know. Talking about putting age limits on this forum is extremely offensive to me, because it implies that the underaged have nothing to contribute.
This reminds me of an anecdote: I have always had a natural gift for spelling. Without having to study, I can remember or guess the spelling of very many words. In every single year in elementary school (except for one, in which the teacher didn't know the rules), I won the spelling bee for my class. In second grade, I lost the school spelling bee on the word "dromedary". In third grade, however, I won the whole thing (for the first but definitely not last time). Third grade, and the school was K-6. I told you that story so I could mention this: A year or two after I was out of elementary school, the administration decided to restrict the spelling bee to the 4th-6th graders, because they assumed a K-3 student had no chance of winning. What the fuck, do people have no memory? I don't really know why I told that story. Anyway, the point is that I hate the idea that everyone under X years old is a retard and/or has nothing useful to contribute.

Oh, by the way, in many countries you wouldn't be eligible for a driver's license, AntiNinja. In France, for example, you have to be 18 years old to get one. So, uh, what the fuck point are you trying to make?

I'll just assume that wasn't directed to me? Because the forum already has an age restriction of 13 (without parental consent)... but you already knew that.
Nice story, by the way. I've seen that kind of ignorant irony from schools all the time. |

Yea, I don't exactly have a driver's license yet. And Linxis, please stop digging up 2 and a half month old threads unless you have something extraordinarily profound to contribute to it. Thanks.

Yes, Sane, it's the law that forums like this have to have an age checkbox like that. The goal is to protect children, not to keep them out; if a 12-year-old thinks they can handle whatever our moronic government is trying to protect them from there's nothing stopping them from checking the box. The goal isn't to protect the forum members from 12-year-olds (and under) but the other way around.
By the way, I'm 16 years old, and I'll be 17 in less than a week, but I certainly used internet forums before 13 and bullshitted the checkboxes. By reversing the intent, as well as suggesting that we go even more moronic than the original laws, you've succeeded in deeply offending me. I forgive you, because I'm sure that wasn't the intent. Discriminate based on a user's proven worth in how much they contribute to or detract from the forum, not based on age. This may very well be a function of age, but that doesn't mean age discrimination is the answer.

Oh, wow, so that was actually directed to me? I deeply offended you with that post...? That's sort of shocking. Oh well, sorry.
Err, I guess I'll just walk away while I can. |
