Can't recommend Head First Java enough. Picked it up the other day, and couldn't put it back down. Fun, engaging, and illustrates things very well.

I will be picking up Thinking in Java(4th Edition) on Friday the 30th woot woot . I can no longer read E-Books it hurts my eyes to glare at the computer screen for so long.
