Hey guys!
Thanks for the replies!
OK Dagger I see about that issue. So it might not be a good idea to go into GTK just yet, not until it is definite that GTK can be used for longhorn.

Ok thanks for explaining!

Yeah mici i'm not talking about my programs (the ones i wrote), I meant stuff like PS and so on. So sounds cool if I can get my hands on wine or DOSemu. Will google for them. I don't know if I should even bother using linux, I mean I have windows, so hell why shouldn't I use windows? Sure I understand it's a good idea to be able to use different os's.
Yeah I know about being able to make the programs compatible on different platforms. The thing is it's very unlikely that I will write a GUI that needs to be cross-platform compatible. Unless I want to release it to open os's. But on the otherhand it might be a good idea to go cross-platform approach. <shrugs>

I on the other hand think that if enough ppl use and utilize (i.e) GTK, it will force Microsoft to allow and perhaps ease porting it to Longhorn.
Yeah, I don't see why this shouldn't stop microsoft. Afterall I'm sure many people won't be happy about that. And why must everything run under Microsoft, when theres other os's such as linux, unix, mac and so on?

Like mici said, it could be a big possibility that free os's such as linux will take over windows. Only when people start to realize. Here in SA linux is not very widely used. but i'm sure that will change.

Hey didn't get time to read the other replies. But will do offline.
Hey mici no problem about going off topic. I'm not fussed. It's OK about that. BTW will join the thread in the lounge!
cheers all!

I got lost concerning the original question but if it
was simply to make a gui in windoze then I have
some samples for you. I did this for someone a
good while back and tracked it down on my comp.
It's an example of similar gui's in asm, c, and java.
If that wasn't your question forgive. It's late.

BTW nice and interesting forums.

this is an interesting discussion but I must admit to being a tad confused.

i'm quite good with Java and don't have much problem punching out simple GUI's in Java. But I'm currently working on a sound file editor and because of Java's known latency issues with multimedia, I decided to choose C++ as the language to code the app in.

Now having looked through this thread a bit, it seems as though I can have a C++ back-end and a Java front-end  ? Can anyone please elaborate?

Also, exactly how bad is the Win32 option - what I am doing right now is sort of struggling to piece together my knowledge of windowed applications by slogging my way through Microsoft's on-line reference guide. Its very dificult and not intuitive in the least, it took me at least three days to understand how to generate and display an empty window.

You could compile a set of multimedia functions into a DLL, and call them from Java, but I'm not sure exactly how that's done.
