That our O'Reilley's Learning PHP, or Programming PHP. PHP is primairly targetted to web based development, though it can be used for console based and even UI based application development I can not say I have seen too many projects which make use of those features... than I think developers are more likely to choose Perl, as I would.

Console apps in PHP are easy. With the addition of the $argc, and $argv variables when ran from console its primary the same without the HTML.
