Auto-locking old threads

I've noticed that some new users tend to dredge up posts that are months, if not years old. They reply, someone replies to inform them of their mistake, and then everyone reads the thread ("hey, new posts!"). Would it be feasible to set a time limit where threads become locked after a certain time, i.e. 2 months of inactivity? Then we could still refer to them, but the dredging effect wouldn't occur. Good idea? Bad idea?

I don't know if this has been suggested before, I just scanned the first 2 pages of threads, and no titles seemed to mention it...

Occasionally old threads may be brought up for righteous intentions, so I don't think locking them would be a good idea.

I agree, I find it very annoying. Maybe only people who have previously posted in a thread can bring it back out of "inactive" status.

i agree with sane. there are some old threads that will help people that come to the forums. if they need something or might need help they can look though them and get what they want.

That's a good idea. Either them or a mod, obviously.

Locking a thread doesnt prohibit them from reading it, just adding to it. If they have a similar problem, they can read the old thread and start a new one, mentioning what they'd already tried...

I always get annoyed when I go to forums and see every other thread in a locked status... it's almost as if they are saying "we don't let you speak where you please, get out".

I've seen this proposed on several forums - compare the last post date with the current date, if it's more than, say 2 weeks difference, then display a warning with another confirmation required to actually post a reply.

I don't like the idea of locking them, but I don't like seeing old posts from years or months ago :p But the confirmation idea seems good.

I'd support the confirmation idea as well. Particularly if the confirmation message emphasised a need for there to be relevant NEW content in a new post.
