Laptop Advice

I'm looking for something to replace my current clunker.

Parameters:
1. Fast AMD CPU (Ex, AMD Turion 64 ML-34), 64bit not required
2. 1GB Ram (preferably 2x512mb)
3. Touchpad (Not the sadistic red trackball)

Graphics acceleration is not neccesary, but a plus.

The Dell XPS and Falcon Northwest laptops are nice, but are much more expensive than comparable models.

The HP DV8000z is one option.

MSI has a nice barebones notebook which can be ordered from custom laptop vendors such as Xoticpc
Does anyone here have experience with MSIs laptop line or this particular vendor?

It would be helpful if you stated the intentions of this labtop. Is this just an all purpose/general use labtop? Homework/programming? Gaming? Surfing the web? I assume all purpose, but I may be wrong.

The hardware limitations mentioned fit the needs I have considered. I don't like waiting on things such as Visual Studio and Inventor so opted for extra ram and a faster cpu than most base systems. Most performance would fall in this category.

I said that anything fancy for graphics acceleration is not needed. If I wanted a gaming laptop at this point then I'd give the Falcon or XPS another look. The X700 in the MSI is plenty for a quick game of UT2004, though.

Apart from those three, you may notice that laptops start to look a lot alike...hard drive sizes and speeds, wireless, and so on can be afterthoughts. Most models have most options available.

So I don't see how what I plan to do besides what you would infer from what I already said would change the outcome at all. Unless you had a Super Deluxe Web Browsing Acceleration Chip in mind.

This is about vendor/model reccomendations based on quality and price.

Apple's new core duo laptops are nice, but pricy (but they're comparible to what you'd pay for an HP business laptop with the sam specs). Lenovos are nice, but performance isn't always there unless you want to spend tons. Toshiba and Acer are some nice consumer brands, but I wouldn't be too thrilled with something from Dell, Gateway, WinBook or HP.

With that said, MSI makes some awsome parts. I've been using their ATX desktop mobos and they are awsome. good quality, even their low end boards have held up well. They're typically what I use when I build computers for people, so i'd imagine their laptop line would be just as good. And that 64bit turion will give you all the power you need.

Wouldn't get an Acer notebook - they're prone to overheating. My sister's constantly turns itself off to avoid damaging whatever its sitting on. I hear their laptops are alright though, though I haven't actually found one myself yet.

I'm going for a MacBook myself soon, but they are a little pricy if you don't intend on using the OS. What's your price range?

I bought my wife a Dell Inspirion and myself a Dell Lattitude... both are nice laptops. I wouldn't be greedy and get a 17"+ monitor though... makes the laptop entirely too large and reduces mobility due to weight.

I usually recommend Toshiba. I bought one when i was in college and another one when i graduated. The first one is still operational after 4 years (a record for me).
