C++ Networking Question

I'm making a database program, so I thought it would be fun to store proxies in it. But I want to be able to test the status of the proxies, i.e. see if they are in working order. However, my Comp Sci teacher doesn't work with networking via C++, so he can't answer my questions.

I thought that pinging would have to be a step in determining if the proxy works, but I'm not really sure. I did some research on the "system" function to run dos commands but I couldn't get it to print anything viable.

Is there anyway to test if a proxy is working?

I use the crappy Turbo C++ compiler if that is any help. (I use it for it's graphics library, and because it's the school's default compiler)

I'm at work right now, and pinging my proxy works. I don't know if that's a way to test if the proxy is working or is just replying to a ping.

Go to your school's sysadmin and tell him he should install Visual C++ 2005 express edition, together with the PSDK.
Tell him to also check the FAQ for additional information.
They are free:

Previously, they announced that Visual Studio Express would be available for a promotional price of one year. They have now extended that period so that Visual Studio 2005 will be free permanently.

That's not my mistake, it's wrong in the FAQ. I just changed "we" to "they". :p

LOL, I hadn't even noticed, but that was yesterday that they announced that. What luck I just came across that. Another thing: there are no licence restrictions:

Can I use Express Editions for commercial use?

Yes, there are no licensing restrictions for applications built using the Express Editions.
Before you ask: Yes I do like Visual Studio a lot. Best debugging environment in my opinion.

And if your CS teacher hates Microsoft or something, recommend the GNU C++ Compiler - you can get it with Code::Blocks. If (s)he's just an old dog that doesn't want to learn new tricks, you're pretty screwed. No one around here uses Turbo C++ any more.
