Windows 98 Programming is what I learned off of. I find Herbert Schildt to be an excellent writer, but that book may be a bit outdated now.

MSDN has a number of sample programs that will break you in relatively gently.

A few tutorial links:

http://www.foosyerdoos.fsnet.co.uk/

http://www.stromcode.com/modules.php...&op=view&tid=1

http://www.functionx.com/win32/index.htm

http://www.relisoft.com/win32/index.htm

http://www.winprog.org/tutorial/

I think the 'StormCode' and 'theForger's tutorials are the easiest to pick up the basics from.

EDIT: I don't want to hijack this thread, but since it's still kinda on-topic: does anyone know if the following book is any good:

Programming Windows, 5th Edition

Cache, yeah it's a great book, a bit too extensive on unicode though, but other than that it's excellent. I have an ebook (pdf) if you want to try it, you can then buy it if you think it looks good.

If you download the Microsoft Platform SDK (and the free visual c++ toolkit, both of which I highly recommend (and they are both free)), you will find many helpful samples covering a range of topics (DHCP, Winsock, COM, media players, etc.)
