PHP servers

I'm trying to teach myself PHP. But I don't want to deal with putting apache and a php parser and msql on my pc. it's a pain and I'm tight on disk space. Is there any way that I can make PHP scripts and run them without having to set up my own server (or pay for one) to test them out on?

Well... you can set up PHP with IIS, assuming you are on Windows... Apache is probably the best way to go, and it's pretty easy to set up. If you are trying to learn PHP, I would suggest getting the book "PHP and MySQL Web Development" by Luke Welling and Laura Thomson. It's a VERY good book, I haven't finished it yet, but it also has a good tutorial on installing Apache on Unix or Windows, and PHP on Apache or IIS. It also explains MySQL too.

Only if you have XP pro can you run IIS. And if you're low on disc space you're probably suffering performace wise. Time to get a new HD.

I too am teaching myself PHP and MySQL. I've installed Apache 2 server, PHP, MySQL and Perl and it all come to under 200mb. It took more time to configure it all and get it all working than it did to install it.

I have a PHP book. I can't afford a new hard drive right now. I just want to know if there is some way that I can run PHP scripts without having to install a server program on my PC.

well, technically if you just installed the PHP Program there's PHP editors that can debug on the spot, telling you if your code checks out and will give you output (similar to what Eclipse or VS does), so there's that route as well

almost all webhosts support php. I dont know about free hosts but I think there are many of them do as well. Get a free webhosting account and upload your php scripts.

Or you can download php and apache, they really arnet hard to get running for personal use

If you don't want to host on your own machine, use someone else's. Either persuade a mate to let you run Apache and an FTP server on his machine (not likely to happen, but it's worth a shot), or get some proper hosting. There are a couple of places that give away free hosting with PHP support, but they're few and far between.

I would suggest getting the book called "PHP5 And MySQL Bible" by John Wiley And Sons. Its over 1100 pages but it will help you really well.

I have over 7 books of PHP5 ^^
