Java & Databases

Hello I am Shane, I am new to these boards... Nice to meet all of you.

Anyways, I have had 4 programming courses and am familiar with

PHP, C++, Java, VB , HTML.

I prefer Java as my main language, and PHP for web apps.

And on to the question... I have worked with databases in PHP (MySQL), and it is incredibly handy. Using them in website situations made me think of how it would have been handy on some of my past client apps. However, they're not always going to be installed like on a web server. And then of course, why not just use comma dilleniated(spelling?) files etc?

What are the bennefits of using databases, and what are the difficulties? Do you have to install a database applications for java to integrate with or can you just create a database file?

Shane

It's comma delimited files BTW.

I'm not 100% sure I understand your question. A database is merely a stored collection of data, in whatever form you care for it to be. If I have saved 50 text files, loosely speaking, that is a database. Benifits of using a database? Errm.... whaddya mean? some sort of database is essential for tons of different programs. Microsoft works has templates that are in its database... it has a dictionary in its database... it has some sort of ruleset for grammar in its database. I supppose strictly speaking, that would be three different databases....

Agame of any substance would at a minimum have a database of images....

Maybe I still don't understand your question??

It might be that I have a mis-conception in my head.

I'm talking about using simple text files, vs interfacing with a separate database application using java.sql

Maybe that cleared it up
