Thinking of building my first comp.
I know this is more of a programming forum, but any tips you could give me? or suggestions to what I need and how I should go about?
Thanks

You can just buy the pieces individually and put one togehter.

It is gonna be effin expensive though. And if you never did it before, chances are, that you are going to break something. I switched the graphic card (gforce 4) in my comp, and somehow I managed to break the on/off switch... don't ask me how...

i dunno depends sometimes it can be cheaper, but you dont get any software with it, etc etc etc, and as far as putting it together i would either play with an old system first, or have someone near to help you out.
I did neither and caused myself a headache many many times.

You can make it as expensive or as cheap as you need. I find that you usually spend about the same as buying retail except you end up with a better machine made out of quality parts.
The hardest part is figuring out what components to use and making sure they all work together. Arstechnica publishes these great systems guides that can help with that. If you are running Linux, make sure whatever components you choose work with your OS. I would also look for instructions online on actually assembling the computer. It's usually as simple as putting the square peg in right hole, but there is some things you need to know. |

Wear a grounding strap and follow procedures religiously. Toss in some common sense -- if a keyed part isn't fitting, you're probably stuffing it in wrong. There are a zillion things you can do wrong that will cost you bucks, but if you stop to think about it, these things are being put together everyday, and correctly, by non-technical line personnel.

Don't be scared... just do a bit of research first (Google). Go for AMD, not Intel - much cheaper. Here are some sites for parts:
http://www.newegg.com/ http://www.directron.com/ http://www.tigerdirect.com/ DaWei, your wrist straps suggestion reminded me of PC Hardware class in high school. I was such an a**hole in high school, that I used to lick all of the processors before I installed them. The teacher never did figure out the 486 machine epidemic of 2000... I would also rig up multimeters, switch them to AC and connect both lines to the sound card in a box and just wait for someone to turn it on. :o

I used to replace fuses with pieces of solder. Fourth of July every day
. We also used to wait until a newb technician got a complicated setup running with all the red and black test leads going here and there. Then we'd feed in a piece of spaghetti tubing from across the bench, wait until he flipped the power on, and blow cigarette smoke through the tube. Smoking in the workplace -- you can figure out how long ago THAT'S been!

Thanks.
I'm planning to duel boot Windows and Linux onto this comp. There aren't any hardware restrictions that would disallow me to do so, are there?
