ASP vs. PHP

I know we have alot of programmers that use PHP and some that use ASP so i was wondering if we could get both sides of the conflict to present why they think their side is better. Please don't make this post a flame war, have respect for everyone that posts, I dont want a "PHP rulz!!!111 And your momma sucks d*#@" thread. Just comments, no arguments.

I was going to use ASP because I was learning C#. So it would have been a nice compliment, however I have XP Home so I have no way to test it locally. As I see it unless microsoft wants to release a free server that can handle ASP it will never beat PHP.

PHP is more cross platform even with the introduction of Mono, and PHP is totally and completely free which leads to that fact that it is support by more web hosts than ASP is.

/me says PHP wins.

I've personally only used PHP, as it's open-source and is available with most hosting plans. I can't wait to see how this turns out.

PHP works very well with Apache and MySQL.... If I wanted to use IIS or Access (which I don't) I'd use ASP.

There is support in Apache for ASP... but it is limited. See here for details. http://www.apache-asp.org/

i would go PHP, i used asp .net and it anoyed me, and my personal hatred of the lecturer who couldn't answer a simple question, on the this subject (his subject) just rightly pissed me off...

So php all the way.

I have seen both languages in use, they both seem really useful, but ASP seems better for Windows and PHP for linux.. since really that was their respective intended targets.

Except PHP will work fine on Windows where ASP only has limited support on linux.

I would never think to use PHP on windows though, that would just be annoying.

PHP is great anywhere. ASP is not.

PHP is C/sh in one. ASP is... gross.

But I'd probably choose ASP if I were using IIS. PHP for Apache.

That's the best distinction.
