Where to start?

I've decided to start programming and have no application knowledge what so ever. Where is a good place to start? Any free compilers or should I nose dive into Visual Basic Standard ($109)? All feedback is wanted

if you want to start using C you can get Dev-C++ (which compiles C++ and C) i believe the website is www.bloodshed.net or if you want to use java http://java.sun.com has free j2sdk's which is what you'll need for compiling java.,good luck
