Give me something to do

I've been trying to increase my skill in programming, so I figured what better way then to ask people for their opinions. What do you guys think I should write to increase my coding ability? I'm a beginner/Intermediate programmer I would suspect, using C, so nothing TOO hard.

natural progression there is onto C++ clearly, with a knowledge of C it should take you no more than a day or two to pick up C++ to a decent standard, that is then accompanied nicely by java or alternatively you can take the .net path with C#.net and asp.net
easy answer, one at a time, and learn them all.
once you know the principles of each type, and how they are applied, you need only remember the different syntaxes. i started on C++ and java and i plan to learn as many as i can. can't do any harm now can it?

It would probably help if we knew what type of projects you've tried in the past.

I've mostly done character input, temperature conversion tables, programs that have counted the number of particular characters and printed them, things of that nature. Nothing too big, but I was going mostly from the book, so I haven't done many personal projects.

How about a simple database type project, which allows you to save and read records?

That's true... but the STL are prebuilt data structures. Writing them from scratch may assist, moreso, in a learning process. STL is a very, very nice asset.

Option try to do an telephone directory or something like that... use a database and store the numbers and names of anyone... maybe email... is something you could use later... and you will feel proud you learned and make it!
