FONTS

Hi,

Before replying to my questions please include a few lines about your programming qualification and experiences.
Frankly, put these details always on your signature.

Has anyone ever built any fonts ?
If so, can I check them out ?
Can you tell me what softwares minimum I need to create them ?
And, can I have your easy-to-understand instructions ?

In an open forum, you are likely not going to get help by demanding someone disclose their programming qualifications, I personally find this a bit rude and my qualifications while having never dealt with making my own fonts in my life cover such that I know the process one would take to complete this task.

With that out of the way I will give you my response, and will not disclose my qualifications, I encourage you to figure that out on your own steam.

There are several types of fonts and each type of font has its own means of being built.

For instance you can have bitmap fonts, very commonly used in games, and very commonly used by individuals who do not yet understand what it takes to design a font.

Simply you create an image with cells of a specific color and a border of a specific color (there really is no limit to the colors) and fonts of a specific color (or not), and place each character within a cell, software that uses these fonts preassigns each cell (by sequence) to there designated latter and renders the cells onto a surface. Windows will support bitmap fonts... but they are UGLY!

Truetype fonts, and Type1 fonts all work a bit differently... they no longer use the bitmap technique because changing the resolution or style in which the font is rendered (such as bolding or italicizing) does not work very well, instead Type 1 and TrueType fonts use a set of mathermatical functions called vetors to represents the edges of fonts... meaning that one can tranform them and still have them render at the correct resolution, and make them look sharp at nearly any size.

These are much more difficult to design, and require the ability to work with vectorizing programs.

As for what programs will allow you to generate fonts, I am not really sure what is available, your best recommendation is to ask Mr. Google--he really knows a lot about this topic.

You will likely find good guides by Mr. Google on how to produce fonts as well, another wonderful use of the resource called "The Internet".

Anyway, have fun.

I know Macromedia has font making software called Fontographer but i'm sure you can find some free software somewhere instead.
