Hi,
I am a new comer in JAVA, or for that matter a new comer in porgramming. It has been about 2 weeks that I have started learning JAVA using a text book that one of my room mates left when he was leaving. It is called "JAVA2 How to Porgram, Introducing swing", Third Edition from Dietel and Dietel. I just checked out the dietel and dietel website and found out that they have released the just released the sixth edition of this book.
Now my question is that
1) Is my book worthless or completely outdated.
2) From which extent it is could be used.
regards

It should not be outdated. If it says Java 2 then most if not all of the swing components will be supported.

Absolutely not. It might not be as up-to-date as you'd like, but if Java is the first programming language that you will be learning, then it will not matter. You'll learn just as much from the third edition as you would from the sixth, and after you've completely learned the third edition it would take you probably less than an hour to figure out the differences. There might be a few new concepts, but once you've learned your first programming language, everything else will come easy. This book will teach you your first programming language, regardless of whether ot not it's up-to-date.

To learn the basic concepts of programming. Trust me, the difference between the third edition and the sixth edition are almost going to be unnoticeable, especially from a beginners point of view.
