Radio/Band Signal Receiver/Transmitter

So this is probably more to the Electrical Engineers and the Radio Buffs in our group. I'm looking for a type of hardware that can pick up radio waves and I don't mean just AM/FM signals, just any type of wave that could be picked up. An Application for this would be you are setting up a wireless network and for some reason you can't get a good signal. So you have this application run and it picks up signals coming from a two way radio someone is using. I'd like to be able to listen to (I don't mean listen to that specific signal, I mean that it can pick up and display) all frequencies. For example, I'd like to be able to pick up TV, AM/FM Radio, CB, Police Radios, etc. I'd like it to also be able to pick up digital and analog signals. Does anyone know of a device that can do this or work as an antenna and then transfer the signal to a program somehow and the program analyzes it?
If something like this does exist, does anyone know of one that can transmit as well? I know that transmitting would get the FCC Involved with certain applications and that would be taken into consideration if the hardware does exists.

A Future thing for this would be setting up my own Wireless network that uses it's own specs to run and not 802.11 A/B/G or N.

Re: Radio/Band Signal Receiver/Transmitter

To my knowledge, that sort of think would be impossible/very expensive. Also, I doubt the authorities would like you having that sort of thing so my guess is that it wouldn't exist but I'll watch this thread just in case.

But no, sorry, I don't know of any exact hardware. You'd need something..... well...... and I quote
Quote:
In the United States, the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) decides who is able to use which frequencies for which purposes, and it issues licenses to stations for specific frequencies.
By "use", they probably mean that they control who can listen to what frequencies as well so it would be impossible to get all frequencies.

EDIT: How would you interface your new networking device with the computer? Wouldn't you like have to re-write a heck of a lot of stuff? Let me know how your search develops......
