Where to Buy Windows XP Pro

So I had a friend of my fathers contact me saying he had a computer built and he ran windows update to find out the windows installed was a bad copy.

So my question to you is where is the best place to pick a copy oem or retail of windows xp pro?

Thanks all.

I've looked on newegg.com and $139.99 seems a little high for an older model... Thanks again.

If it's bad, it's because it was bad to begin with. It doesn't actually wear out while sitting on the shelf.

Unless you have an elitist attitude, or gasoline means nothing, or you're way out in the sticks, just head for your nearest big-box store and get 'er done.

Thanks DaWei, I know the copy was bad to begin with, but due to Microsoft's new validation software the problem was unknown until now.

And again, thanks for you input for the solution.

Could you disable that "Genuine Advantage Update" to keep it from registering it as a pirated copy? May take a re-install. But not sure if it will work or not. I'm more of a Linux guy... but to each their own.

I'm pretty sure that without WGA you don't get to install the updates...

I believe your right, the last time I went ot the update.microsoft.com site, it first checked for a legit copy of MS Windows before even scanning for needed updates. I imagine with a pirated copy or otherwise, you won't make it past that point.

If you are a college student, look into the MSDN Academic Alliance (MSDNAA). I was able to pick up a free copy of Windows XP for my MacBook Pro through my school's partnership with the program.

http://windowsupdate.62nds.com/ is a site that will allow one to update their XP without using microsoft IE, and also does not require WGA. I use it as a means of updating via Mozilla Firefox. Is most handy.

hope it helps.
