500 GHz Processor
I just read an article about IBM using a silicon-germanium transistor and I am simply amazed. The article claims that the processor ran at 500 GHz while being cooled down and 350 GHz at room temperature.
PC Magazine What do you guys think of this? |

I saw this on digg.com a few days back.
Its pretty awesome that they can get 500GHz, that could be quite useful Technology is advancing pretty fast.

I think that's crazy, goin from 5 ghz to 500 ghz. That's one HUGE jump, granted typical users will not get to see 500 ghz, we will only see around 300. It's also on cnn under the technology section. How would this work with memory? Can these same transistors be used for memory also?

The problem with high speed clocks is you can't propagate them over any distance, without degradation, except under nearly ideal conditions. Hanging taps off the transmission medium all along the way doesn't qualify as "nearly ideal". It's why technology, in its advance, has required more and more of the hardware to move up on the chip and hug the processor (and why your FSB isn't the same speed as your processor clock).

Well, a year later and I've heard no news of this. So does anyone know what the deal is?
I've searched everywhere for updated articles. However, there's nothing around.

Nothing on this but there was a demo of a quantum computer. That was a couple months back. http://www.dwavesys.com/

Old bump, eh? I still think this thing is pretty neat. Think it can "handle" Quake 4?

That is to say, the technology is probably too expensive to practical. |
