Payment for PC Repair

Hi guys

I was just wondering...

I repaired and reseated the powerjack on a P3 laptop last night, after the owner had it turned away by two PC repair shops, stating that there is no use fixing it.
Maybe they just don't like soldering on points or this kind of work, but anyway, I fixed it as the client was corncerned to lose the data on the machine.

I stripped it, fixed it, assembled it again and backed up data.
I received the laptop as payment for my efforts, which is not so bad, as happy customers attract more happy customers.

Now to the point...

This is the second 2nd-hand notebook I have received as payment for my work.

I thought it would be cool to hear if anyone else has received similar payment or maybe a hardrive or something for jobs done, (doesn't have to be repair jobs at all) ?

Re: Payment for PC Repair

Yes, and often! Many years ago (God I feel old) I helped with a little VB6 project to write a CD browser application. Not sure if they're still common on Windows machines - what I mean is the program that (traditionally) autoruns when you insert a disc to present its content in a user-friendly way. In payment, I received three Panasonic CF-41 486DX33 laptops (which weren't quite as brutally old then as they are now). I actually still have one of them, though it's been some time since it saw any use.

Just recently I set up a new Lenovo ThinkStation (adding a Wifi card and getting the system up and running) and in reward received the P3 machine it replaced - which donated a decent replacement motherboard for my parents' old P2 box, giving it a new lease of life.

As a Linux user I'm always being given peoples' old machines - once you've said "Wow, a PIII 800, don't throw *that* out!" enough times people start actively seeking you out to rehome their discarded, non-Vista-capable machines. I feel guilty about taking these perfectly usable machines for free, so I tend to volunteer to help set up the new one or do some other useful IT related thing (like bulldozing Vista and putting XP back on for them, heh) for people who offer me their old metal, which means I do quite a bit more box-monkeying than your average software developer but on the plus side I'm never short of test servers.

There's a Yahoo group called FreeShare I use to rehome some excess stuff from time to time, so I never refuse one: if I can't use it, I always know I can find someone who can.

Re: Payment for PC Repair

I've received two 80 GB HDD's, one laptop with winxp on it. and 512 MB's of RAM. I got a lot of stuff from teachers and friends when in HS. When I was young and stupid and I received 30 Apple IIe including monitors from a school that had been shut down a long time ago. I had no idea how to use them or what I was gonna do with them. But i liked finally having a real excuse to not vacuum my room. lol

I've got a buddy that's a big fan of old Apple stuff, and he probably would have absolutely loved that. The upside to getting old tech in bulk like that is that you've got spare parts galore in case something dies. After all, it's not as though you can pick up parts for such old stuff that easily.

Re: Payment for PC Repair

Yeah I ended up giving them to my computer teacher. He throw away the "towers"? I dont know what to call them lol. But he also had some software that he coudl control and see what each computer was looking at. He ended using the monitor for that plugging them into each computer and seeting them on top of the tower so he could see them from his desk. lol redneck network monitoring. Black towers and monitor with a creme colored monitor on top.
