My First Programming Job!
Hello everyone. I just got my real job doing something actually useful. My AP Computer Science teacher's next door neighbor is CEO of this technology company and some how, they ended up talking about me and the CEO of the company was interested in me because they were looking for a junior developer to help out with some projects they have.
I got all the contact info from my teacher and a week later, today, I called the CEO and I was transfered to the company's head programmer. I talked the head programmer for about 45 minutes. They use a lot of Oracle databases and use Oracle Application Express for some of their projects they have. The head programmer had me do some exercises using the online version of Application Express. I finished, after reading some tutorials, in about 2 hours and had emailed the guy back all the information he had wanted to see. I ended up having to make him an administrator username in database I made. For those who are interested to see it, check it out. It is my first database table so go easy on me. http://apex.oracle.com/pls/otn/f?p=3...356655422::::: username: pfoforum password: pfoforum Tomorrow, I have to call him to work out my schedule. Anyway, I would like to know if anyone has any good advice for me to get started using Oracle and learning PL/SQL?

CONGRATS!
When I first started at my current position, I did a lot of work with Oracle and PL/SQL for a web based application. I still maintain it as well, but have since moved on to other projects. My best suggestion to you, would be to try and get an account on Oracle's Metalink (knowledge base). https://metalink.oracle.com/ I did some training up in Chicago years ago for Adv. PL/SQL through a company called TUSC... avoid that, because the class taught the instructor so I don't believe they staff their training classes with knowledgable people. Determine what tools they use and learn them... We use primarily Toad (from Quest Software) over several Oracle 10g databases... makes compiling packages and updating code very easy. You can get The Application Express and other tools from the Oracle website... install them locally and learn by trial-and-error.

Congrats, I remember my first job well, invaluable experience (plus internships always look good on a resume).
As a side note, when you're in the office try to get everyone's life story, whether or not they went to college, how they started in the field etc. People like to talk about themselves and you'll learn a hell of a lot about how to do this full time and what skills you need to learn better. -MBirchmeier |
