Close To Hand

I was wondering (as individual opinions) what it is on a Personal Computer that a user likes to have or ought to have as quick to click or 'Easily Accessible', wether it be software, system tools, or even just system info.

My Reason for asking these opinions of you is that i am writing a program that is or will be a 'Desktop Toolbox' I guess, but i dont want this program to be specific to me and after working on it for a while without talking to others around me about it, i feel i need to get to some gatherin' of information.

i wont yet express my opinions on this matter as they are irrelevant.

Thanks to anyone who would take the time to share their thoughts.

I thought about making somethign similar to this, but haven't got around to it. Personally, I want something that looks good, does not take a lot of resources, and should hide/replace my taskbar, and hide my desktop items. It's basicly a replacement for the desktop. Pointless maybe? I don't know. Just my thoughts, they may or may not help you

Personal opinion: neither the desktop nor the quick launch bar nor the task bar is amenable to substantial improvement from the viewpoint of utility. I wouldn't give a plugged nickel for an improvement. I wouldn't waste five seconds on downloading a free "improvement". Granted, I don't think twice about tiny improvements in appearance. It's like drinking tea, with me: one click, or two? Frankly, when I'm working or playing (which is what I use the beast for), I'm not looking at those things. The desktop is a mere click away if I need it, the quick launch bar is right there.

To me this doesnt seem pointless, and yes the idea is that is should hide the taskbar, or will replace the task bar, though obviously increase in size when prompted.
never thought of putting the desktop within it though, good idea, so far it simply has features allowing you to open control panel applets, log off/shutdown/reboot without being referred from one screen to another, system information such as OS and its details, the User and their details, Drives and their details etc..., a random password generator and a half finished 'task manager'....and a whole bunch of other half finished stuff. its on hold though until i find out peoples wants and needs. -goes and ponders the desktop idea-

Im happy with my current desktop, with everything either a click or hot-key away. I have no reason to switch or replace my desktop. Sorry i cant give any ideas.

Thanks for your opinion DaWei, but may i take a moment to try and sway your opinion by asking: would it not be easier for the one or two clicks you spend on your mouse to be within the same Xcm x Xcm of the screen, rather than to constantly scale the pointer back and forth?

I did make a utility similar to this, it was for all of my games when I used to play my life away. Something of this nature would only be useful for someone who didn't have icon room on their desktop or quicklaunch toolbar.

My only opinion is, have some feature where the user can specify what they want to execute/monitor and let them assign "images" to their choices. Weather, stock quotes, power meter, disk space, free memory, cpu load, process count, etc... would be some things I frequently check.

Along with what IR said. The "toolbar" could have several ultilies which can be added/removed/moved to/from/along the toolbar. Maybe these could eb seperate plugins that could be downloaded.

I was also thinking of a small arrow which when clicked shows the icons of some programs that you can launch, but thats essentially quick launch.

coldDeath, i was planning to use the 'quicklaunch' idea but with features such as options to remove the program, move its location, view all related folders etc..

IR, May i ask would these also be factors that you would like to assign images to?
