Programming a usb flash stick to play music possible?

hi me and my friend were wondering if it would be possible to mod a car stereo to play music off of a usb stick. We are not too sure what exactly that would entail. Most modern car cd players can play mp3's from a cdrom so would little have to be done to the usb stick to get it to play - i.e. just making sure they can connect so the cd player reads from the usb stick? Would the stick need an OS on it like one of the mini linux distros with mplayer on it to play the mp3s? As you can see we aren't even certain what kind of programming this would take so even if someone can point us in a direction to start researching that would be great. Thanks for any replies in advance.

well, your first problem is that your flash stick will probably use a different OS than a CD. Secondly, the way of asking for info is different. It will probably be possible, but it will cost a huge amount of time, which little change of succeeding.

How do you plan on reading the USB stick with a CD-ROM device?

we don't know. We haven't talked too much about it yet just thought of the idea. We have no clue on how to go about it so that is why i asked here. I don't know which would be doing the work - the cd player or the flash drive. If you can play the mp3's directly from the flashdrive it would mainly have to hook up to the system for the speakers.

Shouldn't the system just have some kind of line-in or so? And there's no (logical/reasonable) way to have an optical laser connect to a flash device and... ya it just goes downhill from there

You might be able to McGuiver a small flash player inside of the mount and have it wire up to an audio line that goes to the speakers -- but that's just waaay too much work for anyone that didn't pretty much design the car's stereo system theirselves, anyways.

Hello guys!

I like very such guys like you. You can contrive business successful product. It will be grate if some car music company produce device like you want. Good idea.
But for you it is impossible task I think. Even in my country it will be cost nearly 20K-50K $ to develop prototype of such product. Ukraine is my country. It is not India but device development is cheaper in 5-10 times then in USA or Western Europe.
Why it is so expensive? Because CD-players and a lot of such device use not the CPU like in your computer. They use Signal Processor. It is another computing world. It is very small and very chip but very special processors. It is very difficult to develop windows like soft on them. But they work very fast with sound and video. 10 cents processor can be faster in 100-1000 then P4 3Gh in sound or video decoding.
To develop soft for them you need to have special hardware and develop tools. All programs for them usual are written on clear C.

But if you want to be millionaire you can try to invest your money.
