Are applets worth learning?

I'm starting on Java,
I don't do much web developing, i like normal applications more.
I want to know if it is worth learning to use applets too.

I would say write an applet that displays the Olympic Rings and be done with it until you actually have to write an applet for something.

It's an easy way to do some graphics programming when you're learning Java anyway. You can run them using appletviewer, so you don't have to do it on a webserver. The way you create an applet or make an application are very similar, so it's a good tool to have in your toolbelt. I'd suggest trying some simple applets (java.sun.com has good tutorials) and understand how they work, then when you'll need to write one one day, you'll have the basics down.

You wouldn't need a web server, only a browser. Since applets run on the client side, you can just run them locally. Servlets, on the other hand, must be run on a server.

Did you write these applets yourself?
