Beginner programming parellel port in C++

Hello, all. I am new here, obviously. I hope I am posting this question in the right place. I think I am. My question is this: I am new at programming and have a bit of experience with C++ and I know that is the language for me to learn. I want to learn how to program the parallel port of a computer, particularly laptop parallel ports. I will need to do this regularly for a personal project of mine. I have a basic C++ compiler, Bloodshed Dev-C++ v.4.0 to be exact. Any help for a newbie programmer? I learn very quickly and will dedicate my time to learning this. I don't know the first thing about the port itself so please keep that in mind. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.
