Cool Game Developer

Hello, Ben here, I just recently joined your forum.

I'm a 24-year-old Computer Science Master student, with experience in:

- Parallel algorithm design.
- Network programming.
- C, Java, PHP, HTML, SOAP, XML-RPC, MySQL, XML, and several other acronyms I've probably forgotten to mention.

I have somewhat opportunistic reasons for joining your forums; I'm currently Beta testing a unique game that uses an in-game scripting language to allow you design your own custom applications and complete challenges using real programming techniques -- It is hoped that this game could, as well as being fun, serve as a tool for teaching the basics of programming.

I've already been hitting up a lot of gaming forums promoting the game, but I was hoping I might be able to find some programmers interested in helping in the beta testing process.

Anyway, I'll be interested to see if I can recruit some people from the software development community to help out in testing this project.

Project-Site: http://www.hackwars.net

- Ben.

Welcome to the forums

Your game looks like it might be interesting, so I'll give it a shot. Something to do in my spare time, at least

Re: Game Developer

Question though: how do I post on the forums? There's a [Home] and a [Next Page] link, but that's about all the UI. Couldn't really find a login for the site either, except the game launching page... or do we have to do everything from in game?

Hey Jimbo, you actually currently have to be in game to post to the forums -- we have a full web-browser in the game.

Thanks for the greeting A programming forum that doesn't immediately flame me... I'm liking it here better than Usenet already.

Dont worry Ben, as long as your not an idiot, or ask for help without being clear about what you need help with, we'll be nice to you. :-P Also, if your a computer science master student, i doubt your an idiot.

Our embedded system instructor (PHD Computer Science) used to take the first half hour to talk about his favorite burger place. It was called... Donkey Burger. He even showed us pictures with the donkey shaped sign and everything . Needless to say, I didn't learn much in that class.

Anyways, welcome to the forum bcoe.

Re: Game Developer

That sounds like it could be fun. I have trouble learning new programming stuff sometimes because I have to learn it from other people and I typically get along with games better, honestly.

Although, I must admit that I'm not too keen on playing a game where the goal is to become skilled at writing malicious code. I mean, would you live in a neighborhood where everyone played a game wherein the goal was to be the best at breaking into your neighbor's house? Tick off the guy who's in first and, well, I needn't elaborate.

Since you're a representative of this game, a few questions come to mind:

Why not write a game focused on obtaining the most users for the programs you write that improve systems in the game? Why the malicious focus? It seems like we have enough 12 year olds who get interested in programming by breaking into other people's things anyway, is there truly a need to spread the love?

What would you say to someone like myself, who might have an apprehension about using this application because of its nature?

Is the server for the MMO on the same LAN or VPN as the one for the site?

To your knowledge, is any of the game's source code available to the public at any location?

Because of the game's nature, I'm going to go out on a limb and assume you're using TCP; what OS do you manage from/through?

Obviously, you know that I know your network is secure (no 12 year old's knowledge compares to an MSCS with network programming experience). So why am I asking? Well, let's just say comfort, for the time being.

Re: Game Developer

im new to the forums as well, and i only really do web design, client side, but im only doing it really to have a higher understanding when i start with actual programming, i mean some c# (i looked at it a bit) is similar to javascript. So when i do start i think this would be BRILLIANT, and the opertunity to bring it into highschools and unis is frankly good. By the way what program was it created with and what lang. it focuss on.
