I didn't see this coming.

Re: Sun acquires MySQL

Read about this on slashdot and a mysql blog. I'm not sure if it is good or bad for developers that use MySql at this point. From what I understand, everything will remain status quo... and that their near future plans are to integrate it with Solaris 10, GlassFish, etc to form some sort of web framework. I have plans to switch over to Postgresql if everything goes south.

Re: Sun acquires MySQL

I can't see anything bad coming of this... It's not as if previous distributions of MySQL could suddenly become unavailable.

I think I could even go as far as saying the current build of MySQL could be worn by the industry for many, many years.

Is there a bigger picture I'm missing?

Re: Sun acquires MySQL

I don't think anything bad will come out of this... if it does, its not like we can't rebuild from the pre-merger source.

Re: Sun acquires MySQL

I heard about this a few hours ago and I have to say I'm not too happy about it. I am a LAMP programmer, so I use MySQL daily, and I would hate to see it go down the same route as Java.

what route did Java go down? Sun is big on open source (e.g. Solaris, Java, OpenOffice.org).

Re: Sun acquires MySQL

Java's disadvantages are not a result of Sun's ownership; the same problems would likely be present in the implementation(s) of any language designed with the goal of universal portability. Sun recently chose to make Java open source on their own volition, which is more than can be said of most corporations.

Re: Sun acquires MySQL

I was really surprised about this, but maybe it will be a good thing. But either way I don't think anything bad will come from it. I am kind of interested in what Sun has planned.

Re: Sun acquires MySQL

I liked Java when it was a plugin built into IE. When Sun forbid Microsoft from distributing it (resulting in MS creating C# as their response to Sun's Java), forcing us to download Sun's version, I hated it. Sun's version of Java put an icon in my system tray, loaded at startup, took up resources, and constantly froze my computer. I never used Java after that. To this day, I am unable to view Java applets on my computer.
