MySQL & PostgreSQL
Hey this is my first thread here so try not to rip me apart too fast.
Im thinking about learning how to do database programming in java and i want to set up a database server on windows. I am intersted in MySQL or PostgreSQL. What i want to know is this: How easy is it to get the server working with java? Which one is more suited to someone who is new to SQL but is experinced with java and programming in general? Which one has better admin tools? What are the main differences between them? I would be gratefull for any advice but only from those people that know what they are talking about. If you have not used both then please dont say the other is crap without a damn good reason. If there is anything worth saying that i have not asked about then feel free to say as long as its constructive and relevent. Many thanks in advance for any advice. |

I have only experience with the MySQL-database and it's easy to use SQL on it, no bones in that. I also think you should go for MySQL, it seems to everyone uses it, so there's lot of online stuff to read and it also have some great tool. Try take some time at Google, I'm sure there's something about it.

I'd 2nd MySQL.
1) It is relative easy to get working with Java. See here: http://www.developer.com/java/data/article.php/3417381 2) Either, SQL is SQL... but MySQL, in my opinion, is easier to pick up than Postgresql. 3) I haven't used any admin tools for Postgresql. But I have used them for MySQL... so I really couldn't give an honest answer on this without being biased. 4) Go here for a quick comparison: http://builder.com.com/5100-6388_14-1050671.html

Thanks IR that really helped.
I have looked at some stuff from uni for next year and it looks like one of the professors likes PostgreSQL and uses it in all his database examples on the course web site. I think i will look at MySQL for a month or so and then when i go back i will pick up PostgreSQL if it is required. There is no harm in knowing about both. |

Certainly wouldn't hurt to know both. Good luck...
