Is Computer Science Right for me?
Hi everyone, this is my first thread so be gentle.
I started university last year doing a law degree. But even though i found it not too hard and was getting good grades, i never really enjoyed it much and found most of it boring. I stuck with it untill the start of may when i quit. I then thought about what i was gona do, so i thought after doing computing at school for A-Level and getting an A maybe i should do something related to that. So i applied for Computer Science at the same university i went to last year. Today i got the formal offer for a place starting in september, but im unsure if i want to accept. I know what CS is generaly about, i did alot of research into it, but im unsure of what job oppertunities would come out of finishing the degree 3 years from now. I like programming, but im not sure if i want to do it every day for the rest of my working life. I was just wondering if some of you guys with Computer Science or Software Enginering degrees could tell me whats sort of work i could expect as a new graduate and what carrear paths are avaliable, so i can be sure this is what i want to do. Its just when it dawned on me that being a lawyer is something i would definatly not want to do it really turned me of law. So i dont want it to happen again when i find out a year or two down the line what i have let my self in for with CS. I would really appreciate any adive given. Thanks in advance. |

ill say go with computer science, cause its like the best job there is. I dont got a cs degree, but i did lots of research on it for when im grown, and jobs are like all around.
I even saw a job paying $200 000 US. per year on codeproject.com weather u wanna make video games and work for ubisoft, or make softwares for some other company, cs is definitely the way to go |

I suggest that instead of thinking about whether you want to do CS or not, you should start thinking about what you would enjoy as a career. Perhaps get a job as an intern to find out about the career before you dedicate years of your life towards it.

CS is the code segment, no?

Typically CS has more to do with software, and CE with hardware. That's the most common description of how it's broken down, at least. When I was talking to an advisor at Texas A&M, though, he described it as CS being the study of how computers work and how to make them work faster, and CE being more oriented on existing technologies and how to most efficiently implement them. At my school, it's mostly along the lines of the first, although CE can have a software focus... it's odd...

i.e., at most universities in Ontario, the computer engineering program will give you a Bachelor of applied science (BASc), where Computer science would give you a Bachelor of science (BSc) .

if this helps, personally programming will not be my career, rather my hobby. its what i love to do, but i would rather do what i want with my hobby than get an assignment with it as a job...
im applying to a medical scholars program goin pre-med...so thats my career, ideally something that one is good at (for me it is science and research problem solving) and that you think you can make an impact in .... that way you can have your hobbies and your actual job. however if you like more the problem solving aspect, then having it as a job would be cool --angry_asian |
