Love Routers: Take it Further

My Interest in routers and how they work has grown ever sine i bought my own first router. i have written quite alot FTP and Chat Applications in VB, and i have always used this applications within my private LAN. Now i thought this apps are would properly not work for people that have NAT Routers and use it across the net (no centralised server program just direct connection) because they would have to use port forwarding(on the server side(both apps have Clinet and Server built into them)) so i thought that this would be a good challenge for me and anybody that would like to do. i know there are already applications out there on the net that have done this, but if you like networking and have quite good networking skills it would be an okay challnege. i knwo how to go about this but i just can't code it. has anybody implemented applications that solved these problems and if so was it in VB, if not in VB then what language.....................this is not an VB question or an Project Idea So please don't move it.
